Boracay is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the Philippines today. Recently, there has been an order to rehabilitate the island due to a long list of outstanding ecological and sanitation problems, as well as building violations. Over the last few years, Boracay's water quality has continued to go down and has caused problems which persisted for almost a decade. It poses long term damage to the island itself and its underwater environments.
Since its popularity is continuously growing, there are more people every day thus more establishments are created to accommodate them which results in more and more violations of water treatment laws. This continued illegal dumping of waste has created a "Cesspool that contaminates the shores and corrodes coral reefs ,while posing health hazards to the people that are staying in the area.
The government has been slow to recognize the problem. They have failed to introduce more policies to maintain Boracay to keep it clean. They have also failed in enforcing sanitation and sewage regulations. With the recent order for the Boracay Rehabilitation, some would wonder why do we really need to save Boracay?
We will give 4 main reasons why we should save boracay. We all know Boracay is responsible for a major portion of the Philippines' income from tourism. Currently, Boracay is the 8th most popular tourist destination in the country, if Boracay was to close, P56 Billion in Pesos would be lost in a year. 36,000 people would lost their jobs and 20% of the country's tourist revenues would be gone.
The rehabilitation of Boracay is a new chance to start all over again. With this, we should be more responsible of how we treat Boracay and its natural resources. It is a major part of the Philippines' history and is very important in terms of the country's tourism. We should all be aware of these things to remind ourselves the importance of keeping this island clean and pollution free from now on.
